At one time computer monitors could
be damaged by leaving them on for long periods of time. Images would be
permanently burned into the cathode ray tube. Screen savers were created
to help protect monitors by either blanking the screen or creating a constantly
changing image. Modern monitors no longer have the same problem with screen
burn-in, but screen savers are still with us, more for amusement than for
any practical purpose. Most screen savers do allow you to set a password
to turn them off and get into your computer, but many of the ones included
here might not be quite appropriate in places where other people would
have access to your computer.
